Plumbing

I. Your water supply is the responsibility of the local water company and normally there is a stop valve located at the boundary of your property. Within a home there is also a main stop value where the supply can be cut off. Most of our customers are in new homes, so the builder should have supplied a Home Owner’s Health & Safety Card to locate this and other important matters in your home. If there is a problem with your mains supply beyond your boundary, then this is the responsibility of your water company, otherwise it will be up to you to instigate a remedy.

Distribution

I. Distribution is the pipe work within a home and originates from the stop valve.

Unvented Systems

I. Woodford Heating installs a variety of different systems depending on the location and environment. Unvented systems operate under mains water pressure providing far superior flow rates over the traditional vented systems that have been used in the UK for many years. There are various different types available which can be specified depending on the proposed use and the clients needs.

Water Storage System

I. Typically cold water is stored in cisterns for uses with vented heating, hot water, water closets and boosted water storage. Typically the water is supplied either directly from the incoming mains supply or via another storage cistern/tank.

Valves

I. There are various valves in a home, which allow sections of the water system to be shut off when needed and in emergencies.

II. Stop Valves - Stop valves allow you to shut off sections of the water system if there is a leak or if you need to change a washer or make alterations.

III. Drain Valves - Drain valves enable the system to be emptied of water. There will be at least one of these, normally at the lowest point in the system, under the kitchen sink or near the boiler.

IV. Float Operated Values - In all storage cisterns, the water level is controlled by a float-operated valve. If this is not working properly, the level will rise until the water drains out through a 'warning' pipe which is put in a conspicuous place outside the building. The purpose of this pipe is to warn you that the valve needs adjustment, or is dirty, or the washer needs replacing.
