Woodford has showcased its commitment to developing its people by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.
The 5% Club, initiated by Leo Quinn Group Group CEO of Balfour Beatty in 2013, is a movement of more than 500 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers. Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Members are also asked to publicly report their progress in their Annual Report. Existing members range from SMEs to FTSEs and cover a number of diverse industries, from engineering through to the legal sector.
Woodford are committed to the UK’s growth agenda and aware of the skills shortage in our industry. We acknowledge the importance of developing our employees and aim to play a key role in transforming the fortunes of talented people in the UK by supporting them in providing opportunities and career development at Woodford.
We have circa 30 apprentices at different stages of their development and have many that have been through the apprenticeship scheme at Woodford and are now in site management roles. We also support our staff to develop their careers by study support to gain further professional qualifications.
“Having recently joined Woodford as PX Director and visiting our sites visits to meet our teams, I saw first-hand the benefits of supporting our staff to develop and progress their careers. It encourages engagement and motivation in them to progress their skills further and share their experience and knowledge with new apprentices joining us”; - Sharon Wood.
Gill Cronin, Director of Operations of The 5% Club said, “We’re delighted to welcome Woodford into membership. The 5% Club provides a fantastic network of HR professionals, sharing and learning from each other. All our members share an ethos of creating a skilled workforce through ‘earn and learn’ development programmes, helping people develop meaningful career paths.
”We invest in our apprentices and give them the opportunity to develop a fantastic career at Woodford. Some of our apprentices have gone on to manage full site projects and other to train in roles such as project engineering and site managing. This is because we recognise the importance of investing in our future, offering apprentices the chance to be prepared for the wealth of opportunities Woodford has to offer. It is at this early stage of their time with us that we instil the foundations of TRUST, PRIDE and INNOVATION which will carry them on to a positive future.
